To Whom it May Concern
It gives me great pleasure to testify to the good character and ability of Mr. A.F. Laing. During the past two years I have had constant opportunity to judge Mr. Laing's work in these respects.
In the winter of 1924-25 Mr. Laing proved himself to be one of the ablest of an able class which studied under my direction at Armstrong College. The papers which he then prepared and read were of a high standard and the matters which he raised in discussion were always sound and relevant to the topic under consideration. The success of the class, of which he was, and still is, secretary, bears witness to his administrative ability, and the work which Mr. Laing manages to carry through for the Newcastle Board of the Workers' Educational Association testifies to his interest in the progress of education.
Mr. Laing is the possessor of a pleasing personality which ensures for him the willing co-operation of all with whom he comes in contact in any project to which he turns his hand.

To my British European Airways colleagues here today it is difficult to adequately summarise the professional career of Captain Don Laing. He was a man of the highest principles and his whole working life was dedicated to the well-being of his fellow pilots.
May we share some highlights of his thirty-one years in aviation.
As with many of his age group, Don joined the Royal Air Force in February 1941, training in America as a pilot. He came back to England and was operational in Bomber and Training Commands until 1946, when Flight Lieutenant Laing left the RAF to become a First Officer pilot on British European Airways Viking aircraft. From 1947, until his retirement in October 1972, Don's log books include over thirteen thousand flying hours in command of nearly all BEA's piston and jet-engined aircraft.
But it is in the area of industrial relations that Don was best known in civil aviation circles. He joined the British Air Line Pilots Association (BALPA) in 1947 and soon became involved on the local Council representing his fellow BEA pilots. This voluntary work became even more demanding when he was elected Chairman of that Council and member of the governing body of BALPA, the National Executive Council.
He held these offices for most of the years up to his retirement in 1972. While on the National Council, Don represented pilots on the United Kingdom National Joint Council for Civil Aviation where his expertise on industrial problems was fully recognised.
The 1973 Annual Conference of BALPA acknowledged Don's long and distinguished voluntary service to the Association and its members, in these various elected offices, by awarding him the high honour of its Silver Medal.
Since his retirement from 'active service' in BALPA and BEA, Don has always remained available to help any Association member who experienced a professional problem, serving on a number of sessions of the BALPA Personal Appeals Board.
Don will always be remembered for his involvement in achieving favourable working conditions for all airline pilots. We have lost a valued friend.
