mother: Caroline Marie Dumville née Ohst (1890-1928)
born: 3 January 1915 in New Rochelle, New York

biography:
After the death of both of his parents, Charles lived with the Reverend H.A. Olson family in Hackensack, New Jersey. For a while, he took the last name of Olson in honour of Reverend Olson, but after family differences he reverted back to Dumville. Charles moved to Holland, Michigan to attend Hope College and Western Theological Seminary. It was here he met and married Inez Lorene Von Ins.
Charles was considered a missionary minister in the sense that he would go into areas where churches were not well established, help build up their congregation and in many cases assist in a building project. When he moved to Illinois, the church was in the midst of much turmoil and halfway through a building project. He was able to stabilise the congregation and complete the structure. Reverend Charles Dumville, upon receiving his first call as classical missionary to the classes of California, was ordained as Pastor of the Grace Reformed Church of San Francisco, California on 30 June 1942. He had churches in Norwalk, California; Oakland, California; Knoxville, Iowa and remained as pastor of the Normandale Reformed Church in Pekin, Illinois until his death. Charles died on 6 April 1976, during the week previous to Holy Week. He came in from mowing his lawn and collapsed. He was 61 years old.
He was considered an honest, upstanding man by his peers. He was know as a person who was always outgoing and friendly, even to strangers. When asked why he spoke to strangers walking down the street he replied, 'I may be the only one to acknowledge that person today. Everyone needs someone to recognize that they were here.'

notes:
On 6 January 1997 Evan was diagnosed with terminal bone marrow cancer due to a chromosome defect. Christine was seven months pregnant with Allie at the time of the diagnosis. When Allie was born, her umbilical cord was bled and the fluids frozen to be used in a later bone marrow transplant as she was a perfect DNA match for her brother. In April the bone marrow transplant was completed. In 121 days it crashed, leaving Evan with only one more chance. In February, when Allie was one, they would transfer bone marrow from her to Evan. However, in November, active leukaemia raged through his body and it was necessary to hospitalise him and begin chemotherapy. Due to his weakening condition, it was decided to harvest the bone marrow on 20 January, making Allie the youngest bone marrow transplant donor in the USA.
Once the transplant was begun, Evan seized and was rushed into Intensive Care. It was determined, after surgery on his brain, that he had five fungal infections which were not treatable. On Sunday 1 February 1998 Christine and Greg gave the doctors permission to turn off his life support. He died quietly five hours later.
Like so many children who face cancer, Evan was upbeat, charming and full of joy. It was not until the last few weeks of his life that you could tell he was ill.
