In the 1851 UK Census John is shown as staying with his brother Charles in England:

1851 census, at Sedgefield, County Durham
at East Close House (ref HO 107 2384 folio 635)

Charles Dumville, Head, married, age 24, born Yorkshire, Hunton
Jane Dumville, Wife, age 24, born Yorkshire, Theakston
George Dumville, Son, age 2, born Yorkshire, Exelby
Elizabeth Dumville, Daughter, age 1, born Durham, Sedgefield
John Dumville, Brother, age 29, Agricultural Labourer, born Yorkshire, Hunton

Shortly after that John emigrated to North America with his older brother Joseph (1819-1900, qv). John settled in the St Catharines area of Canada and Joseph went via the Niagara peninsula to Lockport, NY, USA.

In 1854 John married Ann Baldwin and the 1861 Canadian Census shows him farming in Niagara Township, Lincoln County with a growing family. By the 1871 Census the family had moved to Grantham Township, where John and Ann lived until retirement. Ed Dumville, John's grandson, told the story that it was John's intention to retire as soon as he had $1000 in the bank, and he did. Clara Arbuthnot wrote in a letter in 1980 'The old Dumville house is on Niagara Street in St Catharines. A judge used to live there so it is in good repair'.
