Emily and their two daughters Rose Emily and Lilian emigrated from England to Canada in 1920. After they had lived in Stratford, Ontario for about a year, they were joined by Emily's brother Alf and his wife and daughter. The great open spaces that Alf had read about were in western Canada. One friend had a cousin who farmed in Rocanville, Saskatchewan and so it was there that Alf ventured by train in search of work, with his wife and daughter. His sister Emily and her two daughters went with them. At the end of their long journey the station master in Rocanville told them that the friend's cousin had found an employee the day before. However he knew another farmer, a widower, who needed a man and wife, the wife to act as housekeeper. The station master telephoned him. The farmer, Joe Dumville, arrived at the station by car, hired Alf and his wife, and started to load the luggage. Emily said she and her daughters would stay at a hotel while Alf enjoyed his adventure, and then they would all return to Stratford. Joe Dumville protested, saying that he had room in his house for all of them, and off they all went. In 1922 Emily married one of Joe's sons, Ed Dumville. Ed looked after Emily's daughters as his own. Emily and Ed then had two sons, Clifford and Frederick, and two more daughters, Lorraine and Elaine. Immediately after take-off on an operational sortie, his bomber suffered engine failure. Gordon was killed in the ensuing crash but the rest of the crew survived. He is buried in Harrogate Cemetery, Yorkshire, twenty-four miles south of Hunton, where his great-great-grandfather Robert Dumville (c1767-1857) lived. He was the youngest of five children to Charlie and Elsie Dumville. Trevor attended Cambridge School which was located on his grandfather Joseph's farm. Trevor met Elaine Brown in the café in Tantallon in 1955 — it was love at first sight. They married on February 20, 1960 in Tantallon, Saskatchewan. Trevor had been involved in the car business for most of his life. His great passion was for antique autos, especially Fords, but he did on occasion buy a competitor's vehicle because he just couldn't resist. After retiring Trevor loved spending time with his family and restoring and showing his antique cars. Trevor and Elaine met many of their closest friends at various car club functions, shows and swap meets. Trevor always had a keen interest in preserving family history and artefacts. His father's original farm, which was homesteaded 120 years ago, is still in the Dumville name today. When the Cambridge School moved to Moosomin museum it was important to Trevor to acknowledge the history of the school, and so he had a plaque mounted at the original site. |
