In 1815 the new immigrants to Prince Edward Island included a family of Dumvilles from England: father James Sr (39), sons Thomas (15), Joseph (11), Edward (6), and Samuel (5), and a pregnant wife who delivered a son, Thomas Jr, after landing (the ages are approximate). Many descendants of James Sr believe he was the son of Henry Dumville (born in 1725 in Ireland, died in 1789 in Scotland) who was the son of Edmund Dumville (born in about 1701 in Ireland, died in 1762 in Olney, Buckinghamshire).
Samuel C Dumville Jr (1847-1936) was the fifth child of Samuel Dumville (c1809-1889) and Jean (Jane) Dumville née Curie (b c1814), and a grandson of James Dumville (b c1776).

She was the daughter of Samuel C. Dunville (1847-1936) and Lydia MacWilliams (1844-1913) of western Prince Edward Island, Canada. She sometimes went by the name of "Jane" or "Jennie" in her younger years. She married William Warren Sanford (1877-1949) around 1895 and is listed in the United States Federal Census as "Jennie E. Sanford" in 1900 and 1910 living in Everett, Massachusetts. She went by "Elizabeth J. Sanford" in her later years. By 1920 her husband had abandoned her and their seven children, and she told everyone that she was a widow. She never talked about it, but her grandsons Richard and Robert Stevens later learned that he actually outlived her. |
