James Henry Dumville (1776-c1850)

In 1815 the new immigrants to Prince Edward Island included a family of Dumvilles from England: father James Sr (39), sons Thomas (15), Joseph (11), Edward (6), and Samuel (5), and a pregnant wife who delivered a son, Thomas Jr, after landing (the ages are approximate). Many descendants of James Sr believe he was the son of Henry Dumville (born in 1725 in Ireland, died in 1789 in Scotland) who was the son of Edmund Dumville (born in about 1701 in Ireland, died in 1762 in Olney, Buckinghamshire).

Thomas Dumville immigrated to Prince Edward Island in 1815, age 15, with his father James Dumville. It appears that growing up, he later left home and moved to Campbellton, Restigouche County, New Brunswick, where he met Janet Jardine. They married in 1836 and their first son James was born there. They then returned to Prince Edward Island, Lot 7, where their next son William was born and where they appear in the census of 1841. In about 1848 they left Prince Edward Island and returned to Restigouche County, New Brunswick, where they stayed for three or four years before moving across the St Lawrence River to Bonaventure County, Quebec.

born: c 1807 in Scotland
died: before 1890 (reference: Wilson Edwards)
Janet Jardine is listed as born in Scotland and, in at least one family tree, married in Scotland. Jardine was a common name in the Campbellton area, including some immigrants from Scotland. It is considered more likely therefore that Janet was also an immigrant to that region, and met and married Thomas Dumville there.

Joseph Dumville was ten years old when he immigrated with his family to Prince Edward Island and there he grew up, married and started his family. He is listed in the 1841 census with his wife and four children. Between 1854 and 1859 they moved, and the 1861 census found them newly established in the parish of Dalhousie, Restigouche County, New Brunswick. Although Joseph is listed as a farmer, it is known that he also operated a shingle mill for at least part of the time there. In about 1880, with their family grown up and away from home, Joseph and Ann moved to join their daughter Christine, son-in-law Francis Goudin and their children in County Bonaventure, Quebec.
Ann, married: about 1833

Samuel Dumville (b 1845 in Prince Edward Island, married 17 November 1867 Mary Pye (b August 1845))
James B Dumville (b 1846 in Prince Edward Island, died July 1870 in Restigouche County, New Brunswick, from consumption)
Thomas Dumville (b 1847 in Prince Edward Island)
Solomon Dumville (b 1850 in Prince Edward Island)
Catherine Dumville (b 27 May 1853 in Prince Edward Island, married in Dalhousie, Restigouche County, New Brunswick, Francis (Frank) Gaudin (b 8 May 1848 in Jersey Islands or Prince Edward Island))
Charles M Dumville (b 1860 in Restigouche County, New Brunswick)

There is some discrepancy between Solomon and Samuel, who are approximately the same age. Solomon appears in the earlier census and Samuel in later ones, but they never appear in the same census. Could they be the same person with a name change?
